What is Lymphedema & its common symptoms?

Lymphedema is a swelling of a body part usually occurring in the extremities (arms & legs). It can also occur in the face, neck, abdomen and genitals. Lymphedema is the result of the abnormal accumulation of protein-rich edema fluid in an affected area.

What are the components of the gold standard Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT):

How long is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) typically performed ?

CDT is typically performed over a period of several weeks or months 4-5 times per week depending on the severity of the lymphedema and the individuals response to treatment. The treatment is tailored to the individual’s specific needs and can be adjusted as necessary.

What are contraindications for Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massage?

Absolute contraindications where treatment is strictly prohibited include: Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Acute infection (staphylococcus, cellulitis etc), Renal failure, Acute Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Malignant Lymphedema, Hyperthyroidism, Cardia Arrhythmia, and issues related to Abdomen will be avoided.

Complete Decongestive Therapy Two Phase Approach

CDT consists of two phases: Phase 1 is the Intensive Phase involving treating the client until the affected body part is cleared on congestion. When the measurements of the affected body part reach a stable level, the client can be moved to Phase 2, self management phase where the client becomes responsible for preserving and enhancing the treatment outcomes achieved in Phase 1.

What is the ideal initial treatment plan for Lymphedema?

The goal of Phase 1 is to get the extra lymph out of the affected body region, to lessen the swelling and to reduce other lymphedema symptoms.

Phase 1 includes:

  • Bandages with foam are worn 23 hours per day and often only removed to bathe.

  • Number of weeks in this phase depends on the amount of swelling but on average, treatment can range from 2-8 weeks.

  • Complete Decongestive Therapy lasts 4-5 days a week for at least 1 hour.

  • Skin and nail care are important.
